Our Story

From the age of 15, Saransh Mehta has been enamored with the business world. His upbringing and continuous curiosity fostered a deep interest, and since then he has never doubted that one day he would work in the jewelry industry. His father came to Japan in the year 1991 (at the age of 24) with two pairs of clothing and no knowledge of Japan or the language. Although he did not have the financial support to start a business in Japan like many others at the time, his passion drove him to quickly grasp the Japanese loan system. He eventually developed relationships with bank managers and procured enough capital to start his own business. Within a few years, he became one of the most successful diamond merchants in Japan.

While in high school, Saransh spent several summers traveling with his father to visit his clients. This is when he realized what a great communicator and salesperson his father is. He was in complete awe. His father would spend most of the time talking about their personal lives, developing relationships, and within the last few minutes, he would bring up business and swiftly close deals. Saransh usually sat silently right beside his father, eagerly observing how adeptly and amusingly these conversations unfolded. These were the times when it struck him that he wanted to be just like his father. His father’s clients would frequently tell him how incredible of a businessman his father is, and even to this day, it gives Saransh chills when he reminisces.

Rather than going abroad for his higher studies, Saransh decided to pursue his bachelor’s degree at Waseda University in Japan. The reason being, during his free time, he could spend time with his father and learn about this industry from the best. And when the time came, he would be ready to expand his father’s business to new levels.

After seeing his father thrive in this industry for over 30 years, Saransh has become very driven to keep learning and become an even greater businessman and person. For this vision to come true, he knew he had to keep up with today’s technology-driven times and begin a venture completely different from his father’s, in e-commerce. As his father continued to supply diamonds to many of the world’s largest retailers, Saransh began to ponder why we don’t directly supply to end-consumers and thereby bypass the high margins. After months of research and calculation, this ignited a passion that drove him to start an official brand in 2020 called Sakura Hoseki.

In Japan, many people perceive diamonds as extremely expensive and suitable only for special occasions, such as weddings. Hence, many resort to alternative options like sterling silver for their jewelry. Saransh wants consumers to move away from that mindset and show them how diamonds are the most beautiful stones in the world. They should be worn by every individual who has a deep love for accessories.
